New stem cell lines developed from the skin of adults living with
bipolar disorder are providing researchers at the University of
Michigan’s Health System and opportunity to explore the genetic and
biological factors of this mood disorder.

One of the doctors involved in the research, Melvin McInnis MD, says
that “currently the best treatments for bipolar disorder are only
effective for 30% to 50% of patients.” This new research could lead to
treatments that are more effective.

Stem cells can be used not only to treat diseases but can also be used
to study the mechanisms of the disease.

Sue O’Shea, PhD is a professor of cell developmental biology at the
University of Michigan. She says that “we will be able to see if there
are differences in how the neurons of a person with bipolar disorder
make connections, determine how they respond to different medications,
and explore potential deficiencies in signaling pathways of the
brain.”

The study is made possible by the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research
Fund. Heinz Prechter was a well-known automotive entrepreneur, and was
widely recognized for his broad community involvement and political
achievements. Heinz also suffered from bipolar disorder. In July 2001
he lost his fight against the disease, and took his life.

His wife Wally Prechter says that: “I’m really proud that over the
last 10 years my husband’s legacy has grown to include the strides
we’re making to understand bipolar disorder and find new treatments.
Bipolar is like any other illness – cancer, diabetes, heart disease -
and deserves the same urgency.”
